Legendary eatery for sale

Owners looking for ‘right person’ to take over

By Janet Jacobs

Daily Sun

Caleb’s Diner isn’t closing down, but it is for sale, according to the owners.

“Caleb works and I work, and neither one of us has time to go down there,” explained Jordan Hollingsworth, co-owner.

The diner is a vintage 1950s soda shop, complete with booths and old fashioned soda fountain, and is considered a tourist destination for aficionados of the era.

“We love it and we thought about closing it, but we decided we care about it too much to do that,” Hollingsworth said. “We’re going to hang in there until we can find the right person to buy it.”

Hollingsworth and her husband have owned the store since 2007.

“We’d like to sell it to someone who has more time to put into it than we do,” Hollingsworth said.

The shop at 125 N. Beaton was founded in 1905 as Hashop’s Drug Store, and was operated as a family business for 85 years. In 1981, employee Dee Hawkinson bought a 25 percent interest in the store from Will Hashop. In 1989, Hawkinson bought the rest of the store, and reopened it in January 1990 as Dee’s Place. He operated it until March 2007.
